Black and White, the longest standing fashion statement in photography. Gone wrong it looks like a pale watercolour painting done by a 4 year holding a grey crayon. Gone right it just takes your photo to that different untouchable dimension color can’t reach for some reason. A great b&w emotes a different kind of story to me and it is something I never get tired of editing. Lately I have found myself doing too few of them so I thought to take this opportunity as my resurrection in the Black and White world.
It is quite intangible to describe what it is that makes for a beautiful black and white but for me the span between a very black dark point and a very light white point is important and trying to enhance that helps me a lot.
But it is important to remember of just how individual each and every shot is and what possibilities you really have to convert it into the type of black and white that you want. Sometimes you really have to think in black and white to give yourself the best opportunities.
I really do think black and whites with people is what really makes it magical for me eventhough there are lots of fantastic city shots in B&W too and why not surprise and work your macro shots into monochromes, something completely different with extremely high rewards if you get it right.
So give it a go as it is also a brilliant way to go back in your catalog and see all of your pictures in new light and you might surprise yourself of what can come out of it.
